Once at the beach, reading the waves is crucial for selecting the best ones to ride. Watch the horizon for sets of waves rolling in, and look for those with a clean, smooth surface. The ideal wave will have a well-defined peak, where the crest is just starting to curl and break. Waves that break evenly from one side, known as "peeling" waves, offer a longer, more controlled ride. Avoid waves that are too "crumbly" or that break all at once, known as "closeouts," as they can be difficult to ride and offer little time for maneuvers. Observing the waves for a few minutes can help you spot patterns and time your entry.
